NIVEA is a German skincare brand which aims to provide affordable, high quality products for all skin needs. The brand is owned by Beiersdorf AG.
The main ingredients in their Rich Nourishing Body Lotion are water and two petroleum based chemicals, which are derived from crude oil. One of these chemicals is toxic to aquatic life, and both are unlikely to be readily biodegradable. However, they should be inherently biodegradable. Once these chemicals are released to the environment, they will eventually break down.
Some of the other key ingredients are derived from palm oil. Since 2014, Beiersdorf AG has used either derivatives from RSPO certified palm oil, or purchased offset certificates through the RSPO book and claim system. By 2020, they are aiming for all palm oil derivatives to be from RSPO certified palm oil. This is clear commitment to using more sustainable palm oil.
Most of the other ingredients in this product are readily biodegradable and not toxic to aquatic life. The exception is the fragrances. Of those that are disclosed, most are toxic to aquatic life. The majority are also readily biodegradable, which means most of the chemical will break down during waste water treatment – but some will still be released to the environment. In addition to the disclosed fragrances, “parfum” is also listed. There is no way to tell what these chemicals are, or what their environmental impact could be.
This product is available in 75 mL, 250 mL and 400 mL sizes. It is good that larger sizes are available, because this allows less packaging to be used overall. The type of plastic used for the bottle across all sizes is commonly recyclable in kerbside collection programs, but the inclusion of the pump for the 400 mL bottle is a little unnecessary.
But does it work?
Considering how well a product works is a big factor in determining whether a product is a good one or not. A product that does not work is a waste.
Luckily, most users seem to like this product. Most remark that it is a thick product and that it has a strong fragrance, which are pros for some and cons for others. For more reviews, check out BeautyHeaven, MakeupAlley and BEAUTY/crew.
